Membership Isn't Something You Have - It's Something You Experience!
Have you ever paid for a gym membership and realized it felt like throwing cash into a woodchipper because you rarely used it? Participating in a professional organization as a passive member can feel the same way. The greatest value of membership comes not just from belonging, but from actively participating.
Active membership can help you build relationships, shape chapter programs, develop leadership experience that may not be available at your firm, and become part of a larger professional community. Passive membership may feel easier, but it limits what you and your firm can gain from the organization. When firms see employees actively involved, they have more reason to cover dues, support event attendance, and recognize the value of credentials that can further your career.
My personal experience with SMPS has ebbed and flowed since joining in 2017, but I would not be where I am in my career without getting involved. I started as a “green” marketer on the Communications Committee and later joined the Membership Committee, holding leadership roles in both. As Membership Director for the past year, it has been fun working with my committee to develop new and exciting networking events. It has also been rewarding to meet new, prospective, and returning SMPS Colorado members, help them navigate the organization, and connect them with roles that help them get the most out of their membership. Every situation is different, but helping members find their place is worthwhile because this organization has given so much to me over the past nine years.
Are you ready to become an active member of SMPS Colorado? As one of the consistently largest SMPS chapters, the Colorado Chapter offers more events and opportunities to get involved than we have chapter volunteers to support. With opportunities waiting for professionals passionate about marketing, business development, and the AEC industry, your active membership can start today.
If you are looking to elevate your membership into a more active role with SMPS Colorado, don’t hesitate to reach out to me ([email protected]) or anyone on the Membership Committee. We are here to help you find the best fit.
