Mid-Year Reset: A Marketing and Business Development Check-In

As we move into summer, things sometimes feel a little lighter in the marketing world (I say this now, but don’t blame me if you get slammed). Summer construction work is in progress, inboxes slow down (slightly), and many teams shift into a different rhythm. But before we fully settle into that seasonal pace, June offers something even more valuable: a natural pause point.

The halfway mark of the year is one of the best opportunities we have to step back, evaluate, and reset our marketing and business development efforts with intention.

Take a Look Back Before You Push Forward
It’s easy to stay focused on what’s next: next pursuit, next proposal, next connection. But a mid-year reset starts with an honest look at what’s already happened.

  • Which pursuits have we won and why?
  • Where did we fall short?
  • Are we targeting the right clients and project types?

Patterns tend to emerge quickly when we take the time to look. The goal isn’t to dwell, but to learn and adjust.

Revisit Your Strategy (Not Just Your To-Do List)
By mid-year, even the best plans can drift. Priorities shift, new opportunities pop up, and sometimes we find ourselves busy, but not always aligned.

Now is the time to ask:

  • Are our marketing and BD efforts aligned with our overall business goals?
  • Are we being proactive, or just responsive?
  • Where should we double down and what should we let go?

A reset doesn’t mean starting over. It means refining your focus so the second half of the year is more intentional.

Reconnect with Your Network
Summer is relationship season, whether we take advantage of it or not. And no, a ‘like’ on LinkedIn from six months ago doesn’t count as staying in touch.

With a bit more flexibility in schedules, this is the perfect time to:

  • Schedule casual check-ins or coffee meetings
  • Visit project sites or client offices
  • Re-engage contacts you haven’t spoken to in a while

These aren’t always high-pressure conversations, and that’s the point. Strong relationships are built in the in-between moments, not just during pursuits.

Get Ahead of the Fall Push
In AEC, we all know what’s coming: fall gets busy. Really busy. The kind of busy where everything is due at the same time and somehow you also receive ‘a quick turnaround’ request.

Use this window to get ahead:

  • Update resumes and project sheets
  • Refresh boilerplate content
  • Strengthen teaming partner relationships
  • Identify upcoming opportunities and begin pre-positioning

Future you (and your team) will be grateful, because future you is likely operating on caffeine with deadlines stacking up.

Align Your Team
A mid-year reset is also a great time to reconnect internally. Marketing, business development, and operations all play a role in success, but alignment doesn’t always happen automatically.

Even a simple check-in can make a difference:

  • Are we pursuing the right work?
  • Do we have the right people in the right roles?
  • Are we telling a consistent story externally?

Clarity internally translates directly to confidence externally.

Make the Second Half Count
The start of the year always brings energy and big goals, but the middle of the year is where momentum is either built or lost.

Taking the time for a mid-year reset isn’t about slowing down. It’s about making sure we’re moving in the right direction. Preferably before Q4 shows up faster than we expect.

The work we put in now, refining strategy, strengthening relationships, and preparing for what’s ahead, sets the tone for a strong finish.
