Building Connections Beyond Projects: SMPS Colorado at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Collage of Griaffe Herd Adoption

There’s nothing quite like spending an evening surrounded by stunning mountain views, AEC friends, and a tower of giraffes (yes, that’s really what a group of giraffes is called). This fall, SMPS Colorado headed to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for a behind‑the‑scenes look at one of the most exciting construction projects in the Pikes Peak Region: a $40 million expansion of the giraffe exhibit.

The event offered members a unique mix of construction insight, networking, and the opportunity to see the giraffe herd up close. Attendees explored innovative project features like the first‑of‑its‑kind ETFE roof over the new giraffe barn—designed to let in natural light while keeping the space comfortable year‑round—and a brand‑new admissions plaza, café, and gift shop. It was a rare peek into how design, engineering, construction, and creativity come together to bring a major exhibit to life.

A Little Giraffe Love Goes a Long Way

Hosting the event at the zoo sparked an idea: why not leave a positive footprint behind? Inspired by the experience, SMPS Colorado chose to adopt the Reticulated Giraffe Herd at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. The adoption felt like a natural extension of the evening —supporting the animals whose future home we were learning so much about.

This gesture helps fund care and conservation and reflects our chapter’s belief that community impact can extend far beyond the walls of our firms.

Why It Fits Who We Are

If there’s one thing SMPS Colorado does well, it’s bringing people together. This event embodied everything we value:

Connection — swapping stories, sharing laughs, and building relationships in a setting no conference room could rival.

Education — gaining insight into innovative building systems and design approaches shaping the future of zoo environments.

Leadership — demonstrating that our industry can support its communities in meaningful, creative ways.

Looking ahead, SMPS Colorado will continue creating opportunities that elevate learning, strengthen bonds, and give back. Whether it’s hard hats, happy hours, or helping out a herd of giraffes — we can’t wait for what’s next.
